Pool Equipment Brand Comparison: Pentair vs. Hayward vs. Jandy
Pool Equipment Brand Comparison: Pentair vs. Hayward vs. Jandy
The three giants of pool equipment dominate the Utah and Idaho markets. Each builds the full equipment package — pumps, filters, heaters, automation, sanitization, lighting. Here’s the honest brand-by-brand comparison from a builder that installs all three.
Quick Verdict
Pentair — premium, deep automation, strong dealer support. Best for premium builds.
Jandy — solid mid-tier, especially good if your Jandy/Zodiac equipment is already installed.
Honestly, all three are excellent. The differences are nuance. The bigger choice is between equipment TIERS within a brand, not between brands.
Pumps
Pentair IntelliFlo (premium)
Industry-leading variable-speed pump. Quiet, energy-efficient, integrates beautifully with IntelliCenter automation. Higher price point. The benchmark.
Hayward TriStar VS / EcoStar
Strong mid-to-premium. Slightly less polished than IntelliFlo but solid performance. Good price-to-performance.
Jandy ePump
Solid choice especially within Jandy ecosystem. Reliable, less feature-rich than Pentair.
Filters
All three brands make excellent cartridge, DE, and sand filters. Differences are minor. We recommend cartridge filters for most Utah pools (less water waste than backwashing).
Heaters
Pentair MasterTemp (gas) / UltraTemp (heat pump)
MasterTemp is one of the most reliable gas heaters made. UltraTemp is a strong heat pump but has the same altitude limitations as all heat pumps.
H-Series is workhorse reliable. HeatPro heat pump is solid for lower-elevation Utah builds.
Raypak (used by all three brand ecosystems)
Many builders default to Raypak for pure heating performance regardless of pump/filter brand.
Automation
Pentair IntelliCenter
The premium automation system. Deep app, strong integrations, voice control via Alexa/Google. Best if you want top-tier control. Install: $2,500-$5,000.
Hayward OmniLogic
Excellent automation, similar features to IntelliCenter, slightly more affordable. Install: $2,200-$4,500.
Jandy iAquaLink
Mid-tier strong choice especially within Jandy equipment ecosystem. Install: $1,800-$3,800.
Salt Sanitization
Pentair IntelliChlor — premium, integrates with IntelliCenter, expected 5-7 year cell life
Hayward AquaRite — most popular installed system, broadly compatible, good price-performance
Jandy AquaPure — solid choice, especially within Jandy automation ecosystem
Lighting
Pentair IntelliBrite 5G — deepest color saturation, premium
Jandy WaterColors — solid, especially within Jandy-equipped pool
Mixing Brands
Yes, you can mix brands across categories. But automation works best when most of your equipment is the same brand (the controller can monitor and adjust deeper). For new builds, we usually pick a primary brand and stick with it for everything.
Our Default Recommendation for Utah Pools
For new builds we typically install Pentair as a default — quality, automation depth, and dealer support all win for premium builds. For mid-tier and budget builds, Hayward is a strong choice with similar capability at slightly lower cost. Jandy works well as a third option, especially for Jandy-equipped retrofits.
